WELCOME to new Chamber member MDI Community Sailing Center!

WELCOME to new Chamber member MDI Community Sailing Center!
The MDI Community Sailing Center (MDICSC) is an independent non-profit organization located on Clark Point Road in Southwest Harbor, Maine. It offers maritime education and boating instruction to the general public of Mount Desert Island and surrounding coastal communities. MDICSC has become an important part of the lives of many people. It is more than just a place to sail. Since 1996 it has grown to become somewhat of a social club. It is a meeting place for both youth and adults to share their love of the ocean, the coast, and the pleasures of boating. Many of the 200 plus youth who utilize the facility each spring, summer, and fall would be at a loss without this affordable, healthy environment in which to interact.
The MDI Community Sailing Center has been a part of our community for many years. You can read about their history here: http://www.mdisailing.org/about/history.php

Scam Alert! AG Mills Warns of Phone Scam Claiming to be from Maine Office of Tourism

05/21/2014 03:15 PM EDT

(AUGUSTA) Maine Attorney General Janet T. Mills is warning Maine businesses to be aware of a
phone scam that claims to be from the Maine Office of Tourism. The callers claim to be selling
advertising in a publication of the Maine Office of Tourism and then demand an upfront, cash payment
be paid over the phone immediately. These calls are not from the Maine Office of Tourism or any of
their sub-contractors and do not appear to be legitimate.

"Beware cold calls that pressure you to make an immediate payment," said Attorney General Janet
T. Mills. "A legitimate business will give you the time to think about your purchase and won't require
cash or a pre-paid debit card transaction based on a phone conversation. If you receive one of these
calls - hang up. If you have questions, call the Maine Office of Tourism in Augusta. Never give personal
or financial information out over the phone on calls you did not initiate. If someone calls you and asks
you to make payment by money order or pre-paid debit card, that is very big red flag that you are about
 to be scammed."

The Maine Office of Tourism can be reached at: (207) 624-7483

If you have questions about these or other consumer matters, please contact the Consumer
Protection Division of the Attorney General's Office at 1(800) 436-2131 or

Healthy Acadia Offers Responsible Beverage Server and Seller Trainings

Healthy Acadia Offers Responsible Beverage Server and Seller Trainings

As area restaurants, bars, and convenience stores gear up for a busy season hiring new staff, Healthy Acadia is hosting a spring series of our Responsible Beverage Server and Seller (RBS) Trainings in May. The trainings provide staff with knowledge to better prevent violations of liquor laws and serve alcohol safely, with an emphasis on preventing underage and high-risk drinking.

Healthy Acadia will hold an “Off-Premise Training” for employees of retail and liquor stores. It will be held on Tuesday, May 27th (12pm - 4:30pm) at Ellsworth City Hall. “On-Premise Trainings” are for employees of restaurants and bars. Upcoming trainings will take place Wednesday, May 28th (12pm - 4:30pm) at Ellsworth City Hall and Thursday, May 29th (9am - 1:30pm) at Machias Savings Bank in Bar Harbor. Training cost is $25.00. Participants are requested to bring a photo ID with them for certification. For more information and to register, please contact Nikki at 667-7171 or nikki@healthyacadia.org

“All of our employees are required to take Healthy Acadia’s Alcohol Server Seller training class because we believe that it is important for them to be educated,” stated Beth Kimsey, HR Manager for Cigaret Shopper. “I have heard nothing but positive feedback from our employees about the class. Frank Lyons is a talented instructor and his enthusiasm for educating people shows in this class.”

Each retailer whose employees participate in one of Healthy Acadia’s Responsible Beverage Server and Seller Trainings will receive a free copy of the 2014 I.D. Checking Guide, making it easier for servers and sellers to identify fake forms of identification.

Veteran instructor Frank Lyons leads the trainings and teaches attendees how to ensure that safe business practices are implemented within the workplace. Lyons, a former liquor inspector, walks participants through numerous possible scenarios, examines fake identification cards, reviews excerpts from the Maine liquor laws, and discusses all the factors that go into making alcohol handling a safe business.

“State certified RBS training is the cornerstone for licensees to build policies that prevent unnecessary violations, civil suits and tragedies that occur with the unlawful sale of alcohol,” explains Frank Lyons. “The Seller-Server Training programs were designed for the one purpose of helping licensees and their employees stay compliant and avoid those consequences through solid training supported by a sound written policy.”

Healthy Acadia is dedicated to building healthier communities by connecting individuals with health supports, building partnerships, coordinating education and prevention services, and improving policies and environments. Healthy Acadia is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization serving the Downeast-Acadia region and is the Healthy Maine Partnership for Hancock County.

Healthy Acadia Holds Community Forums on Substance Abuse Prevention

Healthy Acadia Holds Community Forums on Substance Abuse Prevention

Healthy Acadia and the Hancock County Drug Free Communities Coalition are excited to invite community members to participate in two dynamic forums focused on substance abuse prevention, as part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)’s National Prevention Week in May.

On Monday, May 19, Healthy Acadia will hold a Town Hall Meeting, “Our Communities. Our Health. Our Future.” The meeting will be held at Ellsworth City Hall auditorium, from 5:30pm to 7:00pm, it is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Events for the evening include presentations by the “Making a Difference Team” from Bucksport High School, a local School Resource Officer, an informative session on “Positive and Resilient Youth Development,” and a panel of speakers regarding community resources available for substance abuse, mental health, and youth diversion services in Hancock County.  Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions, discuss topics of interest, and hear about upcoming training opportunities that will be offered.

On Wednesday, May 21, Healthy Acadia’s Drug Free Communities Project Coordinator, Denise Black, will participate on WERU’s radio broadcast of “Common Health” hosted by Jim Fisher, from 10:00am to 11:00am, on 89.9 FM, 99.9 FM or streaming at www.weru.org.  The segment will focus on Alcohol, Drugs and Pubic Health issues, and community members are encouraged to participate in this forum by calling in to the show.

“The Town Hall Meeting and WERU radio show are great opportunities to learn more, get involved and make a difference,” said Denise Black. “It takes all of us working together to build a safe, healthy and drug-free community.”

In addition to the Prevention Week forums, the regularly scheduled monthly meeting of the Hancock County Drug Free Communities Coalition will be held on Monday, May 12, from 3:30pm to 5:00pm at Ellsworth City Hall. All are welcome to attend.  If you would like more information, please contact Denise Black at 667-7171, or denise@healthyacadia.org.
