Healthy Acadia Will Offer Responsible Beverage Server and Seller Training this Spring While Observing Distancing Protocols

Maine’s busy tourist season may be delayed this year, but Healthy Acadia is still ready to help local stores, restaurants, and taverns safely sell or serve alcohol when they are fully re-opened. “Two things have changed with our state-certified server/seller training this year,” said Tara Young, Healthy Acadia’s Drug-Free Communities Coordinator. “We will be offering training using Zoom to adhere to current physical distancing protocols. And, since so many small businesses in our area are experiencing financial difficulties due to COVID-19, we will not be charging $25 for the training. It will be free for anyone, whether they are a new staff member getting their initial training, someone who needs recertification, or someone who would like to become a server or cashier in the future.”
This course emphasizes increasing employees’ knowledge about liquor laws, the importance of preventing underage sales, and sales to visibly intoxicated individuals, as well as building skills the skills necessary to handle refusing service when necessary. Employees will receive training on best practices to identify minors, false identification, and signs of visible intoxication. Training employees through this 3-hour course may lead to reduced insurance rates for businesses and will help reduce the risk of making costly and/or tragic unlawful sales.
Healthy Acadia will hold virtual training sessions on May 1, 13, 21, and 22, 2020. Off-premise training (for stores licensed to sell alcohol for consumption at another location) will begin at 8:30 a.m. on each of these days; on-premise training (or restaurants, bars, and taverns who serve alcohol) will begin at 12:30. Mount Desert Island Hospital Acquires Cepheid GeneXpert Rapid Point-of-Care Testing System for the New Coronavirus and Many Other Infectious Diseases

MDI Hospital announced today that the organization has acquired a new advanced Cepheid GeneXpert point-of-care testing system that can detect the new coronavirus and many other infectious diseases in approximately 45 minutes or less. This system is now on-site and being prepared for service.

“We are profoundly grateful for the incredible generosity of an anonymous family, who reached out to us to provide our community with this remarkable technology at such a critical time,” said MDI Hospital President/CEO Arthur J. Blank. “In these unprecedented times, access to advanced rapid testing is invaluable, and can only be measured in lives saved as well as the safety of our health care professionals and community.

The rapid detection time made possible by the advanced technology allows hospital clinicians to more effectively diagnose, treat and target COVID-19 infections which can help slow the spread of the disease. Cepheid recently received emergency use authorization from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its rapid molecular diagnostic test for the new coronavirus. Commenting on the development, Cepheid president Warren Kocmond said: “Our automated systems do not require users to have specialty training to perform testing. They are capable of running 24/7, with many systems already doing so today.” To date, the company has more than 23,000 automated GeneXpert Systems worldwide and approximately 5,000 GeneXpert Systems in the US that are capable of point-of-care testing and suitable for hospital use.
