8, the National Park Service (NPS) is temporarily closing the
carriage roads in Acadia National Park to prevent damage to them
during the spring thaw. Carriage roads will be closed to all users
until further notice.

Warming
weather and wet conditions soften the carriage road’s gravel
surface and make them susceptible to damage. Walking, bicycling, and
riding horses in such conditions can cause ruts and potholes that
channel water and exacerbate erosion. The NPS will reopen the
carriage roads once the gravel surface dries out and becomes firm
enough to prevent damage.

In
the meantime, the NPS encourages visitors to explore Acadia’s
hiking trails and the Park Loop Road, which remains closed to motor
vehicles until April 15. When hiking, be prepared for icy conditions
and use traction devices on your footwear. When walking or biking the
closed sections of the Park Loop Road, exercise caution around closed
gates, watch for park vehicles and equipment, and be prepared to
encounter lingering ice and storm debris.

The carriage
roads, along with their coping stones, gatehouses, and stone-faced
bridges, are the best and most extensive example of broken-stone
roads in the United States. They provide access to both sweeping
vistas and close-up views of landscapes across the park.

The Polar Dip has always been the largest fundraisers of the year for Camp CaPella, the non-profit summer camp serving individuals with disabilities. 3 years ago we raised 30k, in 2022 we raised 50K and last year we raised 70K. We want to top that at 100K. We had 102 jumpers last year and would like to see 150 people jump in the lake.

We need your help to get as much on the air as possible.

Most campers who attend, come to Camp on scholarship. Camp CaPella never turns away a camper based on ability to pay, which means every dollar raised from the Polar Dip helps to send someone to summer camp. And everyone deserves an opportunity to experience summer camp in Maine!

This long-standing event is held annually at Camp Capella on Phillips Lake in Dedham and participants receive pledges to jump into the icy lake water through a hole cut into the ice.

Just like last year, there are 3 ways to participate –

1. Live on February 24th at the lake. There will be Prizes, a Hot Tub, Games, Snowmobile/Sled Rides, and Food this year!

2. If that doesn’t work for you, you are encouraged to participate virtually. This option allows you to pick any date in the month of February and get creative with your polar dip efforts – roll around in the snow or create a snow angel in your swimsuit, pop a water balloon of ice water over your head, sit in a kiddie pool full of ice water or run under a sprinkler in the snow! Virtual participants are asked to record a video to share with Camp CaPella’s social media.

3. And, for those that have no interest in getting near anything cold, there is the Jittery Jumper option, where for a small fee you pay not to get cold! Recruit like-minded individuals to pledge you.

Not like last year there will be more winter family fun. Bring your family down to watch people jump into the lake, play some of our new Frost Festival games, have food or listen to some live music.

ALL participants, regardless of which way you choose to participate, are asked to register online. Visit our website, www.campcapella.org to register.

Event Contacts: Melanie Dresser Rebecca Winkler Barrera

207-974-6722           207-843-5104

melanie@campcapella.org      rebecca@campcapella.org
Chamber Officehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10601209474670026385noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4183573498262571412.post-319589710492590752024-01-17T13:35:00.004-05:002024-01-17T13:35:35.425-05:00Welcome to New Chamber Member Camp Beech Cliff!

Welcome to new Chamber Member Camp Beech Cliff!

Camp Beech Cliff states:

OUR MISSION

Through summer camps and year-round outdoor education, leadership and recreation programs, Camp Beech Cliff MDI seeks to enrich the lives of people of all ages. It was reborn as a day camp for both boys and girls in 1991. That was a decade of tremendous growth for the camp. A successful fundraising campaign in the mid-90s made possible the purchase of the 50 acres Camp Beech Cliff was leasing, thus ensuring the property would remain a permanent resource for our youth. Camp Beech Cliff was incorporated as a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 1997, became an independently operated day camp in 1999, and earned ACA accreditation in 2002. In 1991 our summer camp program hosted just 20 campers a week and now, more than 200 kids immerse themselves in nature and fun every summer week with us.

<div class="

Harbor Public Library invites women of all ages of the Mount Desert
Island community to exhibit in March 2024. We welcome pieces inspired
by the National Women’s History
Alliance 2024 theme “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity, and
Inclusion.” It takes courage
for women to advocate for practical goals like equity, diversity and
inclusion when established forces aim to misinterpret, exploit or
discredit them. The exhibit showcases women who are or were committed
to embracing everyone and excluding no one in our common quest for
freedom and opportunity.

We encourage
participants to use any media to create a work for the exhibit that
exemplifies the theme. One does not need to be an “artist” to
participate. Exhibit pieces we welcome are, but not limited to,
collage, jewelry, literature, musical compositions, needle work,
painting, photography, poetry, quilting, rug hooking, sculpture,
sewing and weaving. We also encourage group projects such as quilts,
shared stitchery pieces, or any collaborative process.

2023, hosted by Bidding for Good!

The Camp CaPella Online Auction is
quickly becoming a Holiday favorite fundraiser for us. Camp CaPella
is a non-profit summer camp serving individuals with disabilities.
Over the years Camp CaPella has become the place our campers come to
be themselves, see old friends and make new ones. Although many
campers attend camp through scholarship funds raised by events like
this one they are ALL excited and ready to spend some much-needed
time at “their place”. And everyone deserves an opportunity to
experience summer camp in Maine!

This is our fourth annual Holiday
Online Auction. It takes two months to organize this auction and
each year we strive to create the most diverse auction possible. We
have something for everyone; moto cross helmets, ukuleles, jewelry,
tools, and gift certificates for everything under the sun!

All our local businesses, donors,
and communities have come together to provide items and gift
certificates to auction off to the highest bidder! We have items and
baskets from Bar Harbor to Greenville, Bangor to Belfast and
everywhere in between.

It is a great way to get ready for
the Holidays and provide tuition for a Camper! Help us make 2024
the best year ever! Last year we brought in 7500.00, this year we
want to bring in 10,000.00! So bid high and help us raise the bar on
this event!

John was born on Oct. 15, 1950, in New York. He later moved to Delaware and lived there throughout his teen years. In high school, John worked on Getty tankers during the summers. He ran cross-country, and he was a champion swimmer on the swim team.

<div class="subscriber-only" style="background-color: #f2f2f2; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: "Fira Sans", "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: start;">
When he was in high school, the Vietnam War started, and his older friends came back in coffins. The draft was on, and he would most likely be drafted into the Army. Due to his seagoing background on tankers, he decided to enlist in the Navy, and he ended up working on the bridge as part of the quartermaster crew. In the Navy, he learned ship handling, navigation, diving and became a rescue swimmer. During his time in the Navy, the ship would resupply in Japan, and he met the love of his life, Masako.

<div class="subscriber-only" style="background-color: #f2f2f2; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: "Fira Sans", "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: start;">
After the Navy, John brought her back over to the States, married her, and moved to Enfield, Maine, in 1973. From there he started working on tugboats (as captain or chief mate) on the East Coast and Great Lakes. A year later, he had his first son, Bryan, and a second son, Charlie, followed six years later.

<div class="tncms-region hidden-print" id="tncms-region-article_instory_top" style="background-color: #f2f2f2; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: "Fira Sans", "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: start;">
<div class="subscriber-only" style="background-color: #f2f2f2; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: "Fira Sans", "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: start;">
In the ’80s, shipping became tough, and he was laid off work. He started raking blueberries, picking apples and doing odd jobs to make money. John dreamed of being self-employed and was tired of the layoffs. So, he decided to buy a small fishing boat and moved to Southwest Harbor in 1987. This was a big risk. He knew nothing about commercial fishing. But he knew a lot about deep sea fishing, and started taking people out on his little charter boat. He started to use his boat year-round, deep sea fishing during the summer, lobster fishing during the spring and fall and scallop diving during the winter. He was good at diving, due to his swimming background and Navy experience, and was known to the locals as “Dittmar of the Deep.” He upgraded boats two more times and ran the Vagabond. There were many hardships over the 35-year period, but he was lucky to have two sons who would give him a hand.

<div class="subscriber-only" style="background-color: #f2f2f2; box-sizing: border-box; color: #222222; font-family: "Fira Sans", "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: start;">
John was passionate about fishing — trout fishing, deep sea fishing, dip net for smelts, bass fishing, fishing for sharks, strippers and bluefish, or ice fishing. He even enjoyed halibut fishing and would often do it more for the pleasure and excitement (vs. making a buck). He took his passion for fishing with rod and real, and he turned it into a thriving business. He also enjoyed swimming at Echo Lake, cross-country skiing, running, working out and biking.
