Five types of classes are offered through the Graceful Aging program, an initiative of Healthy Acadia. Classes, led by certified instructor Susan Sassaman, meet weekly in Bar Harbor and Southwest Harbor, are free (donations are accepted) and open to all. The program includes Chair Yoga, Tai Chi for Health, Yoga for Cancer, Yoga Dance for Seniors, Fitness for Parkinson’s and Introduction to Meditation.
Chair Yoga takes place entirely seated, so there is no need to worry about balance or strength issues. Tai Chi for Health improves balance and helps prevent falls. Yoga for Cancer, a specialized yoga methodology, is tailored to address the physical and emotional needs left by cancer and its treatments. Yoga Dance, set to music, is gentle seated yoga and easy dancing across the room as a group. Fitness for Parkinson’s, a well-rounded workout, benefits any senior. Introduction to Meditation explores different mindfulness practices.
All classes are evidence-based and provide therapeutic health benefits. They stimulate the immune system, improve flexibility and strength, reduce anxiety, and boost overall well-being.
