There are several important dates on the Underground schedule you will want to mark on your calendar this month. For starters, our third annual winter holiday costume party will be held after school onDecember 13th from 12:30 until 5:00. While costumes with a winter holiday theme are not required to attend, each year we have had some wonderfully creative outfits, and prizes will be awarded in several  categories. The party will also include special games, activities, and loads of treats. This is a time for everyone who has attended our afterschool programming to get together and have a good time before the holidays and I hope the turnout is tremendous.

Our new CafĂ© Book program is up and running to good reviews. Every Wednesday children's librarian Susan Plimpton comes to the Underground and walks participants over to the Southwest Harbor Library, where they enjoy hot drinks, do some quiet reading or get homework help, assist with simply library tasks, and generally make use of the fantastic community resource we have across the street from Harbor House. At five o'clock the kids are walked back to Harbor House. Parents, if you think your child would benefit from this program be sure to let Mark know!

Students will have some extra days off from school at the change of the year, and we will be offering vacation activities to help out. There will be four days of K-5 vacation camp: Monday and Tuesday December 30th and 31st, and Thursday and Friday January 2nd and  3rd. The cost for each of these four days will $35.Enrollment is somewhat limited, so be sure to sign up ahead of time to guarantee space is available for your child.

Gilley friends carve birds
large and small this fall
A determined flock of Gilley members and visitors joined resident carver Steven Valleau to craft their own hanging carolina wren ornaments this November.

This shy bird can be hard to spot out in the woods, but during this one-day workshop carvers had an up-close look at the carolina wren's cinnamon plumage, white eyebrow stripe, and long, upward-cocked tail. The photo above shows Nancy Andrews working intently on her wren, while Janice Janes shows off her finished bird below.

A more extensive class is also underway now through mid-December, in which carvers are creating the much larger and very handsome whimbrel. Whether you have always wanted to try bird carving, or want a creative way to hone your identification skills, carving workshops at the Gilley enhance your artistic and naturalist talents.

Inspiring words about birds Thank you to longtime Gilley friend and former trustee Ron Cohen for bringing to our attention a recent letter to the New York Times. Eliot Brenowitz, professor of psychology and biology at the University of Washington, wrote some stirring and thoughtful words about the beguiling creatures that caught and held Wendell Gilley's attention for so many years.

"Birds all over the world participate in the great annual migration, finding their way over thousands of miles using a complex learned network of landmarks and star constellations...

"Crows and jays are able to innovate clever solutions to novel problems...

"Every spring, birds in our backyards construct ornate nests with whatever materials are at hand... Songbirds all over the globe learn songs from their fathers...analogous to babbling in human infants.

"Birds do all of this with brains that may be no larger than a marble. So next time someone calls you a birdbrain, thank him for the compliment."
